Climbing in the Flatirons

(Photo: Dudley Chelton)

The climbing terrain that is under the management of the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks extends from Mt. Sanitas to Eldorado Mountain.  This stretch of territory includes such notable features as The Dome, Elephant Buttresses, Flagstaff, The Flatirons, The Maiden and Matron, and Mickey Mouse Wall.  The Flatirons Climbing Council is the climber's representative for these areas.

Within this fabulous area abundant opportunities await every climber.  Sanitas, Flagstaff, the Satellite Boulders, and the Terrain Boulders provide challenge to the boulderer.  Ultra-classic slabs, such as the First and, world famous, Third Flatirons are not to be missed.  Aesthetic and challenging traditional and sport routes are plentiful.

All of these climbing opportunities are located in beautiful settings of forest and cliff.  The views are spectacular, plains to the East, soaring mountains to the West.  It is a place to explore and enjoy.

Fixed Hardware Pilot Program

A pilot program for the placement of new fixed anchors was developed by the Flatirons Climbing Council (FCC). The program establishes a permit process that allows the climbing community to comment on proposed routes that require fixed gear, and is similar to the fixed hardware review process in Eldorado Canyon.
